Beginning July 1st, 2019 all newly sold or installed garage door openers in residential applications in California are required by law to have battery backup. The law applies to new garage doors and garage door openers installations. Homeowners will need to install a battery backup opener when a new garage door is installed or when they replace their existing opener. Existing openers currently in use will not need to be replaced with battery backup openers until the opener requires replacement or a new door is being installed.
